POST 7: CHANGES TO MY STUDY PROGRAMME
Again, I can't write my blog post the same way you would because I am not a student anymore. I can only write about something related but a bit different from my past.
I may have mentioned that I have a bachelor's degree in one area and a master's degree in another. My master's degree is in Linguistics, but my bachelor's degree is in International Relations with a focus on Central Europe. What is that? It is a multidisciplinary degree that mixes Political Science, History, Economics, Geography, Language and Cultural Studies. A lot of people who study that can become diplomats or analysts, or people working in big banks, organization, NGOs or more. I even had a course to learn how to analyze satellite images. I got this degree after four years in 1988.
Unfortunately, by the end of my studies, I was rather sure I didn't want to work in this area. I found most of the people I was around to be too agressively ambitious, to be very political in a bad way--a sort of dishonest insincere way. I just felt like working in that environment was not for me. Therefore, I worked a little and went back to study a master's in something I really wanted, but a bit older and having to work at the same time--I totally different experience as I was a student at night, working by day.
That being said, I did acquire a lot of useful knowledge from my bachelor's degree. It's helped me a lot as an English teacher in that I feel comfortable teaching English for Specific Purposes in various areas because I have some knowledge about Economics, History, or Political Science. It's helped me a lot as an English teacher teaching professionals often from these kinds of areas. As a result, I can tell you that if you feel like you're studying something that you think might not be your future career path, the knowledge and skills you're getting will probably be applicable in some other way in some other context in the future.
I didn't know about that bachelor degree, I think I learn something new today.
ResponderEliminarThanks for the advice! sometimes I feel like my professional career is not my path, but I have learned a lot anyway
ResponderEliminarIt is very good advice, sometimes we feel confused about what we are studying, but it is good to know that what we learn will serve us in some way later.
ResponderEliminarhello professor, how important the last thing you say from your experience, all the knowledge gained makes you better at whatever you do, cheers!
ResponderEliminarI'm sad that your working environmet was like that, but at least you learned a lot of things, i guess you see the positive side. I like the message you gave us all at the end.
ResponderEliminarhi teacher, I completely agree with what you said, because a university degree does not define your life, so everything that one does in life becomes an experience over time.
ResponderEliminarHi! i think that is sad that because of those people's attitude you decided to make a step aside about follow that bachelor's degree.

It is really good to hear that you feel good being an English teacher and that in the end, you could find your path.
ResponderEliminarIt's really sad that you had a bad time in Relations because of the people around. I always get the feeling that I'm going to work in a environment that is not for me and that makes me scared tbh. But I'm really happy that at the end everything worked well and now your here, being a great teacher! :)
ResponderEliminarhello professor, like you, my path does not go for the career that i am studying at the moment, i would like to dedicate myself to something else outside the field of architecture as such.

and I also think it was not wasted time ...
It is much better to go ahead with what makes you feel comfortable. Otherwise one ends up frustrated. Good thing that he was able to take advantage of the acquired knowledge. That's the idea.
ResponderEliminarWow! I hadn't heard about it, interesting.
ResponderEliminarI liked your last message. I think the same, that all the knowledge that we are acquiring will serve us in one way or another. :)
ResponderEliminarIt's very good that you have that bachelor's degree, your diverse knowledge is evident, and I think it makes you a better teacher.
ResponderEliminarI would also like to specialize in International Relations.
I believe that the message that your post leaves is a really important one, even if you dislike what you originally studied, you have to keep in mind that those years were not a waste of time at all, since those knowledges will surely help you in your future profession
ResponderEliminarI appreciate the final message, I believe that within everything there are always positive things that lead us to be who we are today, in your case as a professional.
